Organisation of ELATE materials

Subject Title Pages

On the title page for each subject you will find:

The Syllabus: we have chosen to start by preparing materials for Senior years 1 to 4, which lead up to Uganda National Examinations Board O-level.

Examination papers: a selection of papers from past O-level examinations.

Topics: links to the teacher and student materials organised by topic. These materials do not require the use of computers by students.

Using ICT: For each subject there are one or two activities which allow the use of ICT with students. These can be used either in lessons or in private study time in schools that have suitable computer facilities. Some of these activities would also be suitable for use within Computer Studies.

Web links: The subject title page contains one or more web links to sites that have materials which contains a range of useful material for teachers and students in each subject.

Topic Pages

The topic pages for all subjects have a common layout as shown here using an example from Physics:

Introductory text: This short text is designed to give teachers an example of how they might introduce the topic to students. Teaching is more likely to succeed if students can see its relevance to their lives and if it stimulates interest in the topic. We believe that providing an engaging introduction and using appropriate question and answer and other strategies to stimulate interest in a topic can greatly enhange student motivation.

Downloadable Word Files: We assume that most teachers will be accessing the ELATE materials by downloading the Word files, for example to a personal flash drive/memory stick, and then printing to use in their lesson preparation. Teachers may want to follow the materials closely the first time they use them, but we assume that they will gradually want to edit them and adapt them to their own needs. Downloadable files include:

  • Teachers' Guide - each topic has one or more teacher's guides which identify the topic, the level, the learning outcomes, timing, resource requirments, advice on content and one or more student activities with answers where appropriate. There will also be one or more sample lesson plans and a scheme of work, either within the teachers' guide or stored as separate files.
  • Student Activities - while included in the teacher's guide, the Student Activities have also been separated out and formatted to make it easier for teachers to use them directly with students.

Student Activities: To the left of the page there are links to one or more of the student activity pages. These are formatted as web pages so they can be used directly with students in schools that have access to computers in lessons or private study time. A small number of topics include an activity that enables students to use the computer to support their learning e.g. there are a number of spreadsheet activities that use simulation or data collection and analysis.

Topic Web Links: External web sites with additional material for teachers or students may be indicated on the right hand side of the screen, underneath the word files.
